March flew by and now it’s time to report it before we get too far away from it. Honestly, I didn’t accomplish the goals I set out to accomplish. I meant to post every day, I didn’t. I meant to write longer pieces, I didn’t. I meant to have at least four podcasts, one for each week in the month and I wasn’t even able to hit that. I did make one youtube video each week which I am very proud of and overall I don’t count the month as a failure. Now I’m redoubling my efforts for April.
I’m closing in on the 30 posts minimum milestone I want to reach for this blog — then it will really start to feel like something tangible. The April numbers that are coming in are encouraging. I truly believe there is a growing subset of individuals who value this content. I want to deliver it.
It helps me to hear what kinds of content people reading this blog enjoy so I can complete more of it. Please reach out if you have a suggestion…and thank you!
I published 10 posts in March. I found I was counting the About Me and my Resources pages in my word count that I posted for February. So below I went back and reviewed February in comparison to March. I had more posts in March but they were shorter.
- 8 Total posts
- 8,414 Words
- 1,052 Average
- 10 Total posts
- 6,902 Words
- 690 Average
I think a reasonable goal to strive for is 10,000 words a month. I’m not sure I care too much about how those 10,000 words are distributed though I would like three posts a week, ideally. People who do SEO for a living say that the longer posts are more authoritative and have more drawing power.
I completed two podcasts in March when I meant to complete four, not great. Also, the February podcasts are the bigger draws as you can see below. The podcasts take a while to produce since they are created from the longer form blog articles. The more long-form articles I write the more podcasts. I believe I can complete four podcasts in April. That’s the goal.
Here are the statistics I presented for visitors in February, as a refresher:
- Sessions: 1,029
- Users: 785
- Page Views: 1,482
- Bounce Rate: 85.42%
- Organic Search: 22
- Pages/Session: 1.44
- Time on Page: 00:03:18
- Page Load Time: 5.48 (seconds)
- Session Duration: 00:01:27
And some stats for March that I’ve trimmed down just a bit.
- Sessions: 454
- Users: 267
- Page Views: 838
- Bounce Rate: 77.31%
- Time on Page: 00:02:40
- Session Duration: 00:02:15
The blog is still about content (and it shows in these income figures! :))
- Github private repository: -$7
- Simplecast hosting: -$12
- Affiliates: $0
- Ads: $0
I’d also like to hold myself accountable to my weight. A few days ago I weighed in at 219, down a few pounds since last month. I have a new diet I’m trying out that I’ll elaborate more on in the next monthly report if I stick with it.
The theme of this month is consistency; getting into a rhythm and staying in it. I’m doing well with creating YouTube content (though I’d like to ramp that up as well). If I can stay consistent I’ll achieve my goals.
Four podcasts, four Youtube videos, 10,000 words. Let’s do it.
I just finished the Three Body Problem series on audible and highly recommend it for anyone remotely interested in science fiction. It has a significant number of ideas to explore and the story is set in modern times. It will probably be made into a movie or Amazon series or something sometime in the nearish future. Even so, this is a great fun science fiction ride. I’ll be thinking about it for months.
