Here is a statement that has become non-controversial: Russia attempted to influence the 2016 US general election.
Data supporting this statement has been aggregated from Twitter by researchers who identified Russian bot accounts and has been made publicly available via Github here. These tweets were sent between February 2012 and May 2018, with most appearing from 2015 through 2017. There are over 3 million tweets in this database.
The visualization below does not contain 3 million tweets. Instead, it focuses on the tweets made by accounts labeled “Fearmonger” by the researchers. Highlight and select a region of tweets on the top visual and you will be able to review the content of the tweets by hovering over them in the bottom visualization.
I will make the code that produced this visualization publicly available in an upcoming blogpost.
Pay attention to the warning issued on the Github account: In addition to their own content, some of the tweets contain active links, which may lead to adult content or worse.
